Scouting’s made me what I am

2. There were nights around the fire,
Days spent out on the trail
Canoeing down the river,
Grabbin’ a skunk by the tail.

3. I remember my first badge,
How proud my Daddy was on me,
Hoping someday just like him
An eagle I would be.

4. Then finally came that day
When an eagle I became.
How my Mama looked at me,
Her tears showed me her love.
(chorus)
5. Now the trail goes on and on,
Showing others the way.
Knowing now that I’m an eagle,
A scout I’ll always be.
(chorus)
…The good Lord blessed me as a scout.

<english>

This song was written by Tim Scott. We heard it for the first time in our 1993 summer camp when Tim sang it during the Scout Oath ceremony. Of course, nobody of the Germans understood the lyrics completely, but we thought it was pretty moving to see this American guy standing at our campfire with his guitar and singing this song. For many of us it was an impressing reminder that Scouting is really an international movement. What we were lucky enough to learn even more lively in the years that followed with Scouting The World.

The lyrics remind us of the differences between German and Anmerican Scouting as well as the spirit of Scouting that unites us. Enno wrote the lyrics down from memory, the same way that I wrote down the music. Therefore, the author of the song is kindly asked to check it carefully and to send us any kind of corrections that are necessary.
